What Are The Main Causes Of Depression?

Every one of us has felt the "blues" catch up with us some time or the other. However, Clinical Depression is a different thing all together. You must know all about the causes of depression if you want to avoid this disease.

As we all know that anything, if taken in excess, ultimately causes us harm, it is true even in cases of excessive emotional responses to our surroundings. If you start imagining that you have excess problems in your life, and you must bear the unbearable, in spite of the actual situations being otherwise, you could end up in the clutches of the deadly disease called Manic or Clinical Depression.

Clinical Depression is a disorder which affects both the mind and body of the sufferer. And if untreated, you could end up remaining depressed for not only days, but months together. You will not be able to will yourself out of it.

Unfortunately, not much is known about what exactly causes a Clinical Depression. However, various theories suggest that the causes of depression can be put into three broad classifications. These are genetic or biological factors, environmental influences, and developmental or childhood events.

According to the genetic or biological factor hypothesis, it is believed by doctors and scientists all over the world that depression can be the effect of a faulty gene that is inherited from parents. Numerous tests have shown that most of the times, the offspring of parents suffering from the disease would also suffer from it in future.

Scientists have been successful in isolating a gene that could be directly responsible for depressive behavior in rats. However, it is also true that many people, whose parents had symptoms for clinical depression, have escaped from this disease and have been able to live a fulfilling life.

Environmental influences refer to the seasonal and climatic changes which induce a person to feel low. For example, some people feel depressed during the afternoons in the winter seasons. Some others feel depressed in summer afternoons. While for some others, the depressive periods could be any particular time during a day, whether winter or summer.

Last but not least, the developmental or childhood events refer to those unresolved issues from childhood, which have left scars in the personality of the sufferer. The person had to either face his parent's divorce, or one of his brothers or sisters died, or he was physically abused by someone he trusted, or it could be any other similar incident that he has not been able to accept.

The doctors believe nowadays, that all these above mentioned factors either act singly or separately in bringing about the onslaught of this disease. However, if we are even subconsciously aware of the causes of depression, we can definitely avoid it to a great extent.
